<text>Welcome to "Free Text Browser", version 1.03, copyright © 1990-1992 by Mark Zimmermann. This is the quick-start summary help. For more information, read the detailed documentation in the HyperCard stack "Free Text Help and Services". See the last card of this stack for labels and a graphical summary of all fields and buttons. --------------------------------------------------------- To use "Free Text Browser": - DATABASE: Find or make a text file of information — the bigger the better! This file will be your free text database. If the file hasn't already been indexed for you, click the "Build Index" button on the "Free Text Help and Services" stack, or run "qndxr.c", "TEXAS", "TEX", "MultIndexer", or any other compatible index-building system to create an automatic machine-readable inverted index to your database. - OPEN: Click the "Open" button (at the top, an open book icon) and select your database text file in the standard files dialog box. - INDEX: Scroll around in the two Index View windows near the top of the screen. The Index Views show you alphabetized lists of all the words in your database, along with the number of times each word occurs. If needed, use the Jump (^z) button on an Index View to move to a word of interest to you. - CONTEXT: Click on a word in an Index View to see all the instances of that word in the Context View window at the center of the screen. Your chosen word is shown with half a line of contextual information on each side, to make it easy to pick out the individual occurrences that you want to retrieve. - TEXT: Scroll around in the Context View and click on a line to jump into the full text of your file at that location. The Text View window at the bottom of the screen will show you the actual text from your database, with the chosen key word highlighted. Click on the "Zoom" button (at the top right) to make the Text window get larger or smaller. Click on the up and down arrows next to the "Zoom" button to move up or down in your database. Select a word and click on a "Find Selection" button (icon of a selection rectangle with an arrow pointing to an Index window, on each side of the open book icon) to jump an Index View quickly to a word selected in the Text View. - PLAY: Experiment! - Move around in your database, browsing and gathering information. Learn, make new discoveries, and have fun! --------------------------------------------------------- Hints and tips for new users: * If you're desperate, hold down the "Command" (clover-leaf) key and hit "Q" to quit HyperCard at any time. * Click on this "Quick Help" field (or on the "?" button) to dismiss it. * Hold down the "Command" key and hit the space bar to get the menu bar back on a small-screen Macintosh; repeat to make the menu bar vanish again. * Optional, but *strongly* recommended: before doing heavy browsing, turn on a RAM Cache (from the Control Panel) and reboot to activate it. Even a tiny RAM cache will greatly enhance "Free Text Browser" performance, and will save wear on your disk. * Don't try to index or browse a file that is already open; in particular, don't try to index/browse the Free Text stacks themselves while they are active! (You can, of course, index/browse an inactive copy.) * To print the contents of this "Quick Help" field, under the "File" menu select "Print Report...", and tell HyperCard to print out "Rows", of "Card Fields". * Be sure that your database file is saved as type 'TEXT' ("Text Only", "Text With Line Breaks", etc.) before you index it. You can index and browse a file that is not plain text, but graphics, font changes, or formatting information will appear and may be distracting, and highlighting in the Text View window may fail. All word processors have an option to save a file as type 'TEXT'. * If you edit or otherwise change your database file, remember to build new index files for it -- the old index files should be discarded, as their word lists and pointers may no longer be valid. * Keep the index files as they are initially built for you, named the same as your text database but with '.k' and '.p' on the end, and store them in the same folder as your database. Otherwise, "Free Text Browser" won't be able to find the indices and you'll have to locate the files for the program manually. --------------------------------------------------------- NEW FEATURES: "Free Text Browser" now allows full Boolean (AND/OR/NOT logic) proximity search! My user interface for Boolean search is fast, friendly, clean, and intuitive. I hope you like it -- it took me two years to figure out how to make Boolean search so simple and yet so powerful, and I'm extremely proud of the results!! To do Boolean proximity search in "Free Text": - Click on an "Empty" button (an empty white square icon, between Index View windows) to create a new, empty working subset of the database in the associated Index View. Now the word counts in that Index View show how many of each word are in your subset. Initially, all counts are zero. New buttons will appear between the Index windows, reflecting new options now available to you. - Shift-click on words in an Index View to add their neighborhoods to your working subset. Shift-Option-click on words to subtract them from the subset. - Click on a word (with a nonzero count) in an Index View. In the Context View, you will now see only the instances of that word which occur in your working proximity subset. Lines of dots in the Context View indicate areas (of >99 words) where nothing was found in your subset. - Use a "Fill" button (a gray square icon) at any time to discard a proximity subset and return to full database browsing in the associated Index View. - Use a "Not" button (an empty white circle on a gray background icon) to invert a subset in the associated Index View. - Use the "AND" or "OR" buttons (shaded intersecting circles) to make Boolean combinations of working subsets in the two Index Views. Click on the end of the button closest to the Index View where you want the result of the operation to be placed. - Command-click on an "Empty" button to redefine the byte displacement for proximity search (default, 48 bytes, corresponding to proximity of a few words). - Small auxiliary windows show you the equivalent parenthesized Boolean search statements which you have generated with your mouse click operations. *Any* Boolean search can be generated by an appropriate sequence of clicks! Click on the auxiliary search statement windows to dismiss them; Option-click on an "Empty" button to redisplay its auxiliary search window. See the detailed help in the stack "Free Text Help and Services" to learn more about Boolean proximity search options, and about other new features; in particular, check out the "Guided Tour" which shows how to use all Free Text features.
